How we maintain amazing lead-times

I feel the need—the need for speed!

Speed matters.

Blame Amazon.

Your customers want quick responses, immediate gratification and installation the day after they sign your quote. Their complaints when you quote 6 weeks to delivery won’t lose you the job, but it certainly won’t make them happy. Toss in a couple freight delays and you’re already apologizing before the installation has begun. If this feels familiar, you’re not alone. The industry typically quotes lead-times in weeks, if not months. Templar Screens’ ships in days.

How do we manufacture custom product in days?

Well, we secretly have a million square foot warehouse where we inventory screens in every possible size and color configuration!!! We just pull the unit you ordered off the shelf and ship it…. we’re kidding. It’s actually just three simple things:

  • No Puddles!
  • Powdercoat to Order
  • Capacity Balancing

No Puddles

We designed our factory from the ground-up to facilitate smooth and even flow. There are physically no locations in our shop for your screen to just sit and wait for the next step. When it comes out of the oven, it’s built on the rack and packaged up right there. There’s no unnecessary handling and there are no piles of “work-in-progress” around the shop. We expect that 1 hour after your screen is powdercoated, it’s in a box and ready for shipment. Every individual production step was designed to facilitate this smooth flow.

Powdercoat to Order

Besides the quality improvements from bring powdercoating in-house, we can build our entire production process around the “heart beat” of the baking process. We know how long it takes to bake a screen in the oven for the powdercoat to cure, so each production step is also timed and synced to this beat. Thing of it like a marching band, with the powdercoating oven as the big guy with the drum at the back of the line – setting the beat that everyone marches too. We’re not looking for a big sprint where everyone is trying to get to the end of the race as fast as possible, but a predictable march that can be planned and choreographed.

Capacity Balancing

Our staff levels, hours and equipment capabilities on any given week aren’t matched to the current demand – they are matched to a level ABOVE current demand. As demand grows, we raise our capacity to a level above that demand again. With this method our staff is never running at 100% of what they are capable of every day. It gives us “shock absorbers” that let us handle large waves of production without falling behind. Because once your behind, you’re always playing catch-up.

It takes a lot to execute on each of these ideas, and they’re all really an extension of each other, but all you need to know is that we move fast without being frantic.
